Parent questionnaire

Research gaps at the primary school level

The effects of digitalization on the development of competences are still under-researched, especially for very young pupils (see Digitisation Report). In addition to the digitalization of schools, which is still much less advanced compared to the secondary level, this concerns in particular children's media use at home.

Challenges for parents

Parents face many questions when it comes to digitalization: How much screen time? Are learning apps really helpful? Which device, which game for which age? Should my child learn programming?

Digital inequality

Within the framework of DigiPrim, we want to explore to what extent and why younger children differ in their media use and whether these different usage profiles affect the school performance.

Advancing solutions

The results of the analyses contribute to the development of school digitalisation strategies that reflect different family conditions. At the same time, they should help to better answer some of the questions parents have and to develop evidence-based recommendations.

Parents' answers on the equipment and use of digital devices can be linked to the answers given by the pupils, but also to the achievement of basic skills. For example, we are interested in how media use is related to reading skills.

Households can differ greatly in the equipment with digital devices. If a household has more or different devices, this can also influence the frequency and type of media use and the leisure behaviour of children. This in turn may have an impact on educational achievement.

The time spent with digital media and especially the specific type of activity with the same device are also relevant in this context. Previous studies could not sufficiently clarify this connection. In particular, there are only a few studies on digital media consumption among younger children, also because media consumption in this age group has only changed and expanded greatly in recent years, especially due to the spread of tablet computers.

In the parents' questionnaire, questions concern the use of digital media in the everyday life of the parents and the surveyed pupils or students. This involves the equipment of the household with digital devices and the frequency and type of use. In addition, the parents' attitudes towards digital media and the children's media use are surveyed.

Further questions concern the family, the pupils' home and the parents' educational and employment situation. These questions allow us to examine the influence of social background on the use of digital media at primary school age. This connection is still largely unexplored in this age group, as is the question of the effects of the way digital media are used on the performance of young pupils.

The questionnaire should be completed by a parent or guardian of the pupil who has taken part in the corresponding survey within the framework of the ÜGK. The parent questionnaire takes around 15-20 minutes and is completed online (PC, tablet, laptop, smartphone, etc.). All the necessary login details can be found on the letter that the students bring home from school on the day of the survey.

A central goal of the DigiPrim project is to investigate the impact of digitalization on students' educational success. For this, we need information on how often and for what purpose pupils use digital devices. Households differ greatly in the equipment with digital devices.

Parents' responses on the everyday use of digital media can be correlated with the information provided by the pupils as well as with the results of the basic skills test and information on the school attended.

The data collected is archived for scientific purposes. All data collected is treated as strictly confidential and is subject to the Swiss Data Protection Act.

The data do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individual children, parents or schools. Schools do not receive any feedback on the performance of their pupils or on the responses of parents and their children.

Here you will find an extended FAQ as well as further information on the general section of the parent questionnaire.
